About James City, North Carolina
James City is a community of 5,291 people in Craven County, across the Trent River from New Bern, the county seat. During the Civil War, Union troops held New Bern, and they set up a camp across the river where people freed from slavery could build new lives. The camp stood on land that had belonged to Peter G. Evans, a colonel in the Confederate Army, and that settlement grew into today's James City.
“James City in Craven County evolved during the Civil War and Reconstruction years as an independent community of Black and African American North Carolinians , most of whom had been formerly enslaved.”
- Named for Horace JamesThe camp was called the Trent River Settlement at first, but by 1865 it carried the name of its founder, Horace James. A Union Army chaplain, James served as superintendent of Negro affairs and also acted as agent for the federal bureau that oversaw freedmen, refugees and abandoned lands.
- Between two tidal riversJames City sits on the Neuse River's tidal west bank, where the Trent River, one of the Neuse's tributaries, divides it from New Bern. Water covers 6.3 of its 13.9 square miles. Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is in the community's northwest corner.
