About Jay, New York, Drawn Like an Old Atlas

Jay was first known as Mallory's Bush, after Nathaniel Mallory, who settled here around 1797. In January 1798 it became a town and was renamed to honor John Jay, then governor of New York. Lumber and iron ore drove its early economy.
