About Jefferson, Maryland
Jefferson is a community in Frederick County, at the western foot of Catoctin Mountain. It began in 1774, when 40 lots were laid out on a 96-acre tract owned by Mrs. Eleanor Medley, with 20 on each side of the road from Frederick to Harpers Ferry. The village was called New Town, and in 1795 Elias Delashmutt platted 22 more lots on its western end under the name New Freedom.
The Maryland Legislature incorporated the two sections together as Jefferson in 1831. A year later the townspeople decided they didn't need a town government and gave up the charter, so Jefferson has stayed unincorporated ever since. Also in 1832 the old plats were joined and recorded under the new name, which a local doctor chose to honor Thomas Jefferson.
- Once called Trap TownGriffith's map of 1795 marked the village as Trap Town. Local history says the name came from its many taverns, which were said to stand at both ends of town, so a traveler could get caught on the way in or on the way out.
- Wagons and livestock drivesJefferson grew in the 19th century thanks to its spot on the busy route linking Frederick with Harpers Ferry, now Maryland Route 180. Wagons and herds of livestock passed through often, and shops opened to serve travelers and the farms nearby. Because it was a farm trading center, Jefferson was also home to a large enslaved population for much of the late 18th and 19th centuries.
- A railway link in 1907The Hagerstown and Frederick Railway connected Jefferson to Frederick and Hagerstown in 1907. Even so, Jefferson Pike remained the only road to the steam railroad station in nearby Brunswick.
- A plan from 1774The rectangular layout of the first 40 lots still decides how Jefferson looks today. Houses stand in single rows along the main road, much as the village was first drawn.
