About Jericho, New York
During the Revolution, British troops occupied Long Island, and Jericho's Quakers suffered for it. They were forced to house soldiers in their homes, yet they held to their peaceful beliefs. After the war the village prospered again. Its Friends Meeting House dates from 1788, and worshipers gather there today.
Elias Hicks was a carpenter from Hempstead. In 1771 he moved to his wife's family farm in Jericho and became a well-known Quaker preacher. In 1817 he helped bring an end to slavery in the area.
