About Oyster Bay, New York
Oyster Bay is a town of 301,332 people in Nassau County, and it is the only town in the county that reaches all the way across Long Island, touching both the Long Island Sound side and the Atlantic side. When Europeans arrived, the Matinecock, a band of the Lenape people, lived on this land. Settlers from New England came in 1640, but the Dutch claimed the area for New Netherland and soon arrested them in a dispute over the border.
In 1650 the Treaty of Hartford set the line between Dutch and English claims at "Oysterbay," though each side read the name its own way. The Dutch meant Cold Spring Harbor to the east, while the English meant every bit of water joined to Oyster Bay Harbor. English settlers bought their first land here from the Matinecock in 1653. In 1664 King Charles gave Long Island to his brother James, the Dutch gave up New Amsterdam, and in 1667 the new colony of New York chartered the settlement as the Township of Oyster Bay.
“six kettles, six fathoms of wampum, six hoes, six hatchets, three pairs of stockings, thirty awl-blades or muxes, twenty knives, three shirts and as much Peague as will amount to four pounds sterling.”
- The summer White HouseSagamore Hill, in the village of Cove Neck near the hamlet of Oyster Bay, was the home of Theodore Roosevelt. While he was president it served as his summer White House, and today the house is a museum.
- A census of 1755When the Province of New York counted enslaved people in 1755, the Oyster Bay list ran long and took in Jericho and what is now North Hempstead. A local militia captain went further on his own and added the free people of African and mixed ancestry he feared might join an uprising, even though free people were not meant to be counted.
- From Queens to Nassau in 1899Oyster Bay started out in Queens County, and British forces held the town for most of the American Revolution. In 1898 the western part of Queens joined New York City, and in 1899 the rest became Nassau County. Glen Cove, to the west, broke away in 1918 as a city with a government of its own.
- Farms to suburbsAfter World War II, houses spread over the town's farmland. About 40,000 people lived here in 1950, and by 1990 there were more than 290,000. The town now honors 40 buildings and sites as Town of Oyster Bay Landmarks.
