About Plainview, New York
Plainview was first called Manetto Hill, a name on the 1695 Bethpage Purchase deed. In 1885 residents asked for a post office, but the name was too close to one used upstate. They chose Plainview, because the hills gave a view of the Hempstead Plains.
Plainview farmers grew cucumbers for the big Heinz pickle factories in Farmingdale and Hicksville. After World War II, potato blight and returning GIs led many farmers to sell. Between 1950 and 1960, the hamlet grew from 1,155 people to more than 35,000.
