About Jim Falls, Wisconsin
In 1861, Ahgamahwegezhig caught a young eagle and canoed down the Chippewa River. At Jim Falls, he sold it to Daniel McCann for a bushel of corn. McCann then sold the eagle to soldiers of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry. The eagle, Old Abe, went with them through many Civil War battles. His statue now stands near the dam.
The community honors James Ermatinger, who set up a trading post near the falls in 1840. At that time they were known as Vermillion Falls. In 1855, Ermatinger served as a Justice of the Peace for Chippewa County.
