About Joplin, Montana

Joplin is a community of 159 people on the eastern edge of Liberty County, next to Inverness on the other side of the Hill County line. U.S. Route 2 passes along the south side of town, 10 miles east of Chester, the county seat, and 50 miles west of Havre.

The first homesteaders came that spring, in 1910. A North Dakota land developer named E. C. Tolley helped many of them file their claims, and he laid out a townsite. Even so, people in Joplin name Joseph E. Rehal, an immigrant, as their founder, because he put up the town's first four buildings and became its first postmaster.

  • A railroad stop by 1902The Great Northern Railway kept a station house at this spot as early as 1902, eight years before the homesteaders arrived and the townsite was laid out. The town grew up beside those tracks.
  • One school for three townsJoplin's class of 1974 had 18 graduates. In the early 1980s Joplin and Inverness combined their schools to form J-I school, which later joined with Chester's. When the Chester-Joplin-Inverness district was formed in 2005, the old Joplin School closed, and the new district now teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • The Empire Builder wreckOn September 25, 2021, Amtrak's westbound Empire Builder was on its way from Chicago to Seattle when it left the rails 1 mile west of Joplin. Eight of the train's ten cars, all at the rear, came off the track. The crash killed three people and left 50 others hurt.
