About Gildford, Montana

Gildford is a community of 141 people in Hill County, on U.S. Route 2, 29 miles west of Havre, the county seat. Homesteaders founded the town in 1910 and named it after Guildford, England.

They placed the new town a mile east of Dayton, an older settlement that had grown up around a general store at the Sage Creek crossing. Five years later Gildford gained a flour mill, which went on running until 1951.

  • Golden Grain Flour, 1915 to 1951G. F. Mundy built a flour mill in Gildford in 1915. Its brand, Golden Grain Flour, was sold in towns all along the High Line. The mill kept grinding for decades before it shut down in 1951.
  • Schools joined with Kremlin in 1971Gildford ran its own public school district until 1971, when it merged with neighboring Kremlin to form the K-G School District, with both the junior high and the high school in Gildford. Before the 2005-06 school year, K-G merged again with the Blue Sky district to create the North Star Public School District. The elementary school stayed in Gildford, and older students now go to Rudyard.
  • The Empire Builder rolls throughAmtrak's Empire Builder, running between Chicago and Seattle or Portland, passes through Gildford on BNSF tracks. The train doesn't stop here, so riders board 29 miles east in Havre.
