About Kremlin, Montana

Kremlin is an unincorporated community of 78 people in Hill County, Montana, on U.S. Route 2. Havre, the county seat, lies 19 miles to the east, and Shelby is 84 miles to the west. The town grew up as a stop on the Great Northern Railway serving the surrounding cattle range, and its settlement began in 1909.

That year land agent K.C. Farley drew up the plat for the new town and centered it on the railroad's section house. A standardized depot later took the place of the section house, but neither building survives along the tracks today. Drivers on the highway still pass the town's sign, which makes a point of its unusual name.

  • Russian homesteaders in 1910Kremlin's first large wave of homesteaders arrived in 1910, a year after settlement began, and many of the newcomers were Russian. They came to a place the Great Northern had first set up as a stop for the cattle country around it.
  • The Empire Builder rolls throughAmtrak's Empire Builder, which runs between Chicago and Seattle or Portland, travels through Kremlin on BNSF tracks. The train doesn't stop here, so riders board it in Havre, 19 miles east.
  • One school for four townsNorth Star Public School serves four towns, Gildford, Hingham, Rudyard and Kremlin, and teaches every grade from kindergarten through 12th. About 160 students were enrolled there in 2024.
