About Junction, Illinois
Junction is a village in Gold Hill Township in Gallatin County, Illinois. Established in the 1880s, it took its name from the meeting of the L&N and B&O railroads. The community lies along Illinois Route 13 near the Saline River, and the 2020 census recorded 56 residents.
- Three Community NamesThe post office opened as Cypress Junction in 1884, became Junction City in 1888, and adopted Junction in 1894.
- Rivers and FloodingJunction's flat setting is vulnerable to Ohio River flooding that can force water back into the nearby Saline River.
- March 1997 FloodA major flood in March 1997 displaced area residents and left only one road into the village unblocked.
- 2010 Village AreaThe 2010 census measured 0.883 square miles in total, including 0.88 square miles of land and 0.003 square miles of water.
- Church FireLightning struck the steeple of Junction General Baptist Church on June 1, 2022, and the building burned down.
