About Kachemak, Alaska

Kachemak is a city of 576 people in the Kenai Peninsula Borough of south central Alaska, set along the northern shore of Kachemak Bay. Locals call it Kachemak City. Its subdivisions line roughly 2 miles of East End Road, and the city borders Homer, which is much bigger in both land and people.

  • Incorporated in 1961Kachemak became a city in 1961, when most of the people living here were homesteaders or commercial fishermen. It is a second class city under Alaska law. Over the following decades its residents took jobs across the economy of the southern Kenai Peninsula, and many others chose to retire here.
  • From 431 to 576The census counted 431 people in Kachemak in 2010. Ten years later the count had grown to 576, all living on the city's 1.6 square miles of land beside Homer.
