About Kansas, Ohio
Kansas is a community of 175 people in Seneca County, set in the northwest corner of Liberty Township. Its founders platted the town early in 1855 beside the tracks of the Lake Erie and Louisville Railroad, and they named it for the Kansas Territory. The railroad gave the farm families around it a place to ship their crops, and Kansas still has its own post office, with the ZIP code 44841.
- Platted in 1855Kansas was laid out in early 1855 along a new railroad line. Its name came from the Kansas Territory, so the Ohio town shares its name with a far western place.
- A stop on the railroadThe line that ran through town began as the Lake Erie and Louisville Railroad. By 1911 it had become the Lake Erie & Western, and Kansas was one of its stations.
- Some of the county's best farmlandWhen the History of Seneca County was published in 1911, its author counted the fields around Kansas among the very best farm country in Seneca County.
