About Kelleys Island, Ohio

Irad Kelley first saw the island when he had to take shelter there on a trip from Detroit to Cleveland. He and his brother Datus began buying its land in 1833, paying one and a half dollars per acre. In time they owned all 3000 acres. In 1840 they renamed Cunningham Island after their family.

  • First limestone quarryThe first quarry on the island opened in 1830. John Clemons and his brother dug its limestone. They built a dock to ship the stone to the mainland.
  • War of 1812 postIn the War of 1812, General William Henry Harrison used the west shore as a military meeting post. At that time the island was still called Cunningham Island.
