About Sandusky, Ohio

Sandusky is an Erie County city and county seat on Lake Erie's southern shore, at the head of Sandusky Bay. Its waterfront position supported growth as a port, while tourism and fishing became the economy's main focus during the twentieth century. The 2020 census counted 25,095 residents, and downtown streets retain the pattern of Hector Kilbourne's 1816 plan.

  • Portland OriginsWhen surveyor Hector Kilbourne prepared the first town plan in 1816, the settlement was called Portland.
  • Compass and SquareKilbourne arranged Huron and Central Avenues as compass arms, with Elm and Poplar Streets forming the square's sides.
  • Route to FreedomBefore slavery was abolished, freedom seekers passed through Sandusky and crossed Lake Erie by boat to Amherstburg, Ontario.
  • Railroad ArrivalAfter its 1835 groundbreaking, the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad encouraged industrial development and carried goods through the port.
  • Cedar Point ExcursionsIn the late 1870s, Cedar Point operated as a beach resort reached by steamboat from Sandusky.
