About Bloomingville, Ohio

Bloomingville is a community of 255 people in Oxford Township, Erie County, close to Pipe Creek. It grew up in the northwestern part of the township along an old Indian trail, and the first permanent settlers arrived there in 1811. A post office named Bloomingville opened in 1815, and the village itself was laid out two years later, in 1817.

The post office stayed open until 1906. Over the years Bloomingville remained a compact cluster of farmhouses around the crossing of Mason Road and Patten Tract Road, and many of those houses had working farms beside them. The Oxford Grange Hall, at the spot where Taylor Road branches off Mason, served for many years as the center of community life.

“The ground is high and dry, and had been a favorite place as a camping-ground with the Indians before a white man’s foot had touched it.”
History of Erie County, Ohio, 1889
