About Milan, Ohio

Thomas Edison was born in Milan on February 11, 1847, in a small brick house on a hillside. He lived in the village until age 7. Then his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan. The house where he was born is now a museum open to the public.

The Milan Canal opened to lake ships on July 4, 1839. For at least 15 years, Milan ranked among the busiest ports on the Great Lakes. Railroads ended that boom in the 1850s. In 1868 a flood broke the canal's feeder dam, cutting the village off from the lake for good.

  • Founding and nameEbenezer Merry laid out Milan in 1817 on the site of Petquotting, an abandoned Moravian mission village. The village was first named Beatty. It took the name Milan, after the city in Italy, when it incorporated in 1833.
