About Kenai, Alaska

Kenai is a city of 7,424 people in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, at the mouth of the Kenai River on Cook Inlet, 158 miles southwest of Anchorage by road. The Kachemak people lived here from 1000 B.C. until the Dena'ina Athabaskan people replaced them around 1000 A.D. The Dena'ina named their village Shk'ituk't, meaning "where we slide down," and about 1,000 of them lived there when Russian fur traders came in 1741. The traders called them Kenaitze, a Russian word for "people of the flats."

In 1786 Pytor Zaykov built Fort Nicholas here for the Lebedev-Lastochkin Company, and it became the first European settlement on the Alaska mainland. Trouble grew between the Dena'ina and the newcomers, and in 1797 the Dena'ina attacked the fort in what came to be called the battle of Kenai. More than one hundred people died on both sides. Smallpox arrived in 1838 and killed half of the Dena'ina.

  • From chapel to churchAs the Orthodox faith spread among the Kenaitze, the Russian Orthodox Church raised the chapel at Kenai to the rank of a church in the 1840s. In 1895 the village built a new Russian Orthodox church, named for the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and its congregation still worships there.
  • Alaska's first big oil strikeHomesteads opened around Kenai in 1940. A dirt road from Anchorage followed in 1951, and the Kenai Spur Highway brought pavement in 1956. In 1957 drillers found oil at Swanson River, 20 miles northeast of town, the first major oil find in Alaska. Offshore discoveries in Cook Inlet in 1965 set off a stretch of fast growth, and Kenai was later named an All-America City in 1992 and again in 2011.
  • A 97-pound king salmonIn 1985 an angler pulled a Chinook salmon weighing 97 pounds 4 ounces from the Kenai River, a world record for a sport catch. Eight of the ten biggest king salmon ever caught came from this river. Every July the river mouth hosts a dipnet fishery for Alaska residents that brings more than ten thousand extra people into the city.
  • Wildwood StationThe Army set up Wildwood Army Station in 1953 as a major communications post, and it later became Wildwood Air Force Station. In 1974 the base went to the Kenai Native Association as part of the settlement of Alaska Native land claims. The State of Alaska leased it, then bought it, and it is now the Wildwood Correctional Complex.
