About Kennett, Pennsylvania

Kennett is a township of 8,289 people in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Its Quaker congregation, Old Kennett Meeting, became divided over slavery in the years before the Civil War. In 1853 the Mendenhall family, abolitionists who had belonged to the old meeting, helped found a new one, Longwood Progressive Meeting.

  • Oakdale and the Underground RailroadThe Mendenhalls were Quakers who opposed slavery. They took in freedom seekers traveling the Underground Railroad and hid them at Oakdale, the family home near Kennett.
  • A meeting with Lincoln in 1862Dinah Mendenhall served on a committee that met with President Lincoln in 1862. Its members urged him to put the Emancipation Proclamation into effect. Dinah and her family were also firm supporters of the right of women to vote.
  • Old Kennett MeetinghouseThe Mendenhalls first worshiped with Old Kennett Meeting, the congregation that later split over slavery. Its meetinghouse still stands in the township and joined the National Register in 1974.
