About Toughkenamon, Pennsylvania
Early settlers kept very few Indian names in Chester County. An 1881 county history counted only three, and Toughkenamon was one of them. The name meant Fire-Brand Hill. The other two were Octorara and Pocopson, which meant a brawling or rapid stream.
Samuel Strahon and his partners made spokes and wheels near Chandlerville. Their factory there burned, and they rebuilt it in 1864. In 1865 they moved their spoke machinery to Toughkenamon, into Isaac Slack's sash and door factory. The next year they brought their wheel machinery and bought the building.
