About Kenova, West Virginia

Kenova is a city of 3,033 people in Wayne County, where the Big Sandy River flows into the Ohio. Its name joins pieces of Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia, because those three states met at this spot before West Virginia was created. The place was earlier known as Morganza and as Virginia Point.

L. T. Peck picked the site, just west of Ceredo, because the Norfolk & Western Railway planned to put its first Ohio River crossing above Cincinnati there. He formed the Kenova Association, bought 900 acres of bottomland and began his town in 1889. The railroad drove Kenova's early growth, and the city was incorporated in 1894.

  • Dreamland Pool, opened 1926Dreamland Pool measured 250 by 125 feet when it opened in 1926, and it was once the largest swimming pool in the country east of the Mississippi. A three-story pavilion ran beside it, and Big Bands played its top-floor dance floor in the 1930s and 1940s, drawing Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. Fire destroyed the pavilion in 1972, but the pool survived. The City of Kenova took it over in 1973 and renovated it in 2015.
  • Twelve football state titlesCeredo-Kenova High School, known locally as C-K, won 12 state football championships, two in basketball and one in cheerleading, plus a 1995 regional baseball title. In 1998 C-K merged with Buffalo-Wayne and Vinson High School of Huntington to form Spring Valley High School. The old C-K building came down in 2015. Kenova Elementary, a winner of several national blue ribbons, is now the city's only public school.
  • A railroad bridge townPeck's bet on the railroad still shows. A major Norfolk Southern bridge carries trains over the Ohio River at Kenova, and CSX trains on the former Chesapeake and Ohio Kanawha Subdivision run through the city as well.
