About Kent, New York
Kent is a town of 12,900 people in Putnam County, set on the hilly inner ridges of the Hudson Highlands. Its first European settlers, Zachariah Merritt among them, came in the mid-18th century from New England, Westchester County and the Fishkill area. In 1748 Elisha Cole and his wife, Hannah Smalley, who had come from Cape Cod the year before, built Coles Mills. The land belonged to Frederickstown Precinct, chartered in 1772. When Carmel and Patterson broke away in 1795, the part left over became the Town of Frederick, which joined the new Putnam County in 1812 and took the name Kent, after an early settler family, in 1817.
For years Kent's farms sent milk and dairy goods to New York City, but the city's need for water changed the town. Boyds Corner Reservoir, built upstream in the early 1870s, left the Coles Mills streams too weak to supply the mills, and work on the West Branch Reservoir shut them in 1888. By 1895 the hamlet lay under water. Flooding drowned many farms too, and by the 1920s farming and dairying had nearly ended. Cars then brought city people, first for weekends and summers and later to stay, and Lake Carmel, built around a man-made lake in the 1920s, grew into the town's largest community.
- Sybil Ludington's rideCol. Henry Ludington and his daughter Sybil lived where Interstate 84 now crosses Ludingtonville Road. In 1777, during the Revolutionary War, Sybil is said to have ridden 40 miles in a single night to call out her father's militia.
- Wappinger land, Philipse lotsKent lay within the Highland Patent of 1697, later called the Philipse Patent, while the Wappinger people still lived here. Daniel Nimham, who lived from 1724 to 1778, was the last Wappinger chief. After Frederick Philipse II died in 1751, his heirs divided the patent, and in 1754 it was cut into nine lots. Most of Kent went to his daughter Mary, who later married Col. Roger Morris.
- New York's tallest fire towerThe State of New York and the CCC put up the Nimham Mountain Fire Tower in the Taconic Hills in 1940. At 82.5 feet, it is the tallest fire tower still standing in the state, and it appears on the National Historic Lookout Register.
- A record BuddhaKent's Chuang Yen Monastery holds a Buddha statue that is the largest found indoors anywhere in the Western Hemisphere.
