About Kerman, California

Kerman is a city of 16,016 people in Fresno County, 15 miles west of Fresno. It began around 1891 as a water tank and pump on the new Southern Pacific line between Tracy and Fresno. The stop was named Collis, for the railroad's president, Collis Potter Huntington. Its first resident kept the tank filled for passing engines, but after a few months he quit. The work was fine, he said, but the place was too lonely, and the train crews never had time to talk.

The dry, empty land around the stop belonged to the Bank of California, which had bought a big tract in every county of the state as a gamble. The bank failed after its promoter died, and its land was sold off. Los Angeles investors William G. Kerckhoff and Jacob Mansar bought the tract because they could buy water for it from the new Enterprise Canal, fed by the Kings River. They joined the first three letters of their two names to make Kerman, and they sold farms to Scandinavian and German families from the Midwest. Kerman became a city in 1946.

“An agricultural center and a railroad freight transfer point, Kerman has been laid out and built up on progressive lines as to public utilities.”
History of Fresno County, 1919
  • Train robbers in 1892On August 3, 1892, Chris Evans, John Sontag and George Contant held up a Southern Pacific train at Collis. Contant was sent to Folsom State Prison. Evans and Sontag stayed on the run for ten months until they were caught in 1893 at the Battle of Stone Corral. Sontag died of his wounds in custody, and Evans was convicted and sent to Folsom too.
  • From Collis to KermanThe Collis post office opened in 1894 and closed in 1899. It opened again in 1904, and in 1906 it took the name Kerman.
  • The last manual switchboardThe independent Kerman Telephone Company strung lines through the farm districts of Empire and Kerman. In 1991 it retired its four-position manual switchboard, which a state telephone association called the last one of its kind in California.
  • Sister city since 1985Kerman has been paired with Kannami, in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture, since October 12, 1985.
