About Kimbolton, Ohio

Kimbolton is a community of 152 people in Guernsey County, Ohio, set along Wills Creek in the northern part of Liberty Township. The town began under the name Liberty, but it went by Kimbolton once its post office opened, and it later spent more than a century as an incorporated village. Cambridge, the county seat, lies 9 miles to the south.

“When the office was established, Liberty was proposed as the name for the postoffice, but the department ordered that another name be chosen, there being at the time too many Libertys in Ohio. Mr. Luccock gave it the name of Kimbolton, after his ancestral home in Huntingdonshire, England.”
History of Guernsey County, 1911
  • Laid out as Liberty in 1828The town's first plat was drawn by John Gibson in 1828. He named it Liberty, which is still the name of the township around it.
  • A post office since 1837The post office opened in 1837 under the name Kimbolton and has run ever since. The name honors Kimbolton, England, the home of the local merchant who chose it. When residents incorporated their village in 1884, they took the post office's name as their own.
  • A village until 2005In March 2004, voters decided to end the Village of Kimbolton and pass its powers to Liberty Township's trustees. The dissolution became official on April 30, 2005, and the census now counts Kimbolton as a community within the township.
