About Kings Bay Base, Georgia

Kings Bay Base is a community of 2,329 people in southeastern Camden County, and the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base sits within it. The city of St. Marys borders it on the west, and the community grew from 1,777 people in 2010 to its 2020 count.

The Army came first, with a standby terminal on the Intracoastal Waterway built to handle and ship explosives. In 1979 the Navy picked this 16,000-acre site for a base for its Trident and Poseidon-class submarines, and construction was finished in 1993.

  • Named for Thomas KingThe bay, and the base after it, carry the name of Thomas King. He was the brother of Roswell King, and he made his home on a tract of land beside the bay.
  • The Navy's costliest peacetime buildBuilding the submarine base at Kings Bay cost more than any other construction project the Navy had ever taken on in peacetime. The work followed the Navy's choice of the site in 1979 and was completed in 1993.
  • College classes on the baseValdosta State University and Brenau University both ran satellite campuses inside the base, teaching sailors, their families and people from nearby towns. Brenau shut its campus in 2016, when the base changed its rules to favor bigger schools, and Valdosta State moved its program off the base to the Camden Center in Kingsland.
