About Knox, New York

Knox is a town of 2,635 people in the northwestern part of Albany County, west of the state capital at Albany. During the American Revolution, the people living here were divided over which side to support, and the quarrel ended only when the Tories moved away. The land stayed part of the Town of Berne until 1822, when a section of Berne was split off to form the new Town of Knox.

  • Carved from Berne in 1822Knox was created in 1822 out of part of the Town of Berne. The older town's name still lives on inside Knox at West Berne, a hamlet that sits right on the town line in the southwest corner.
  • Once called KnoxvilleThe hamlet that shares the town's name, in the southern part of Knox where Beaverdam Creek flows past, was known as Knoxville before it took the shorter name Knox.
  • District School No. 5Knox District School No. 5 was one of the numbered district schoolhouses where the town's children were taught. The building joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
