About Princetown, New York

Lawmakers in Albany formed Princetown in 1798. They joined the old Corry's Bush lands with acres held by a Schenectady Dutch Reformed congregation. The town honors John Prince, who served Albany County in the state assembly and made his home in Schenectady. Many early settlers came from Scotland.

The local Presbyterian church sponsored the Princetown Academy and Female Seminary, which opened in 1853. By 1854 it had more than 400 students, some from Cuba, Germany and Scotland. Poor money management closed it in 1856.

  • Local tavern keeper who printed moneyCheeseman's Tavern stood in the hamlet of Gifford's Corners from about 1784. For a few years its owner, Joshua Cheeseman, was a well-known shinplaster banker who printed paper notes used across the region.
