About Rotterdam, New York
Rotterdam is a town of 30,523 people in Schenectady County, with the Mohawk River along its northeast edge. Dutch settlers founded it in 1661 and named it for Rotterdam in the Netherlands, the port where many emigrants last stood on European soil. For generations the land served as Schenectady's farm fields and wood lots, because most settlers lived inside the Schenectady stockade and went out to work their land by day.
When Schenectady became a city in 1798, these lands formed its third ward, and they kept that role after Schenectady County was chartered in 1809. In May 1819 the city council proposed turning the third and fourth wards into towns, and a petition to the state legislature was drawn up on December 31. Lawmakers passed the bill on April 14, 1820, the last day of their session, and Rotterdam became a town of its own.
- Stronger through EffortRotterdam was designated a town of the first class in 1942. It later adopted the coat of arms of the Dutch city it was named for, along with that city's motto, Sterker door Strijd, which means Stronger through Effort.
- Babe Ruth champions in 1980In August 1977 the all-star team from Carman Little League reached the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and finished fourth. Three years later many of the same boys, joined by a few players from Rotterdam Little League, went to the Babe Ruth World Series in Williston, North Dakota. They fought their way up from the losers' bracket and beat Hawaii twice in one day to win the national title.
- Gateway to the WestRotterdam lies close to the eastern start of the Heritage Corridor that crosses New York State, a route long called the Gateway to the West. Its story has been tied to neighboring Schenectady since the first Dutch farms, and the town still shares a border with the city today.
