About Niskayuna, New York

Niskayuna is a town of 23,278 people in Schenectady County. It is the easternmost town in the county, and the Mohawk River forms its northern and eastern lines. For centuries the Mohawk grew maize in the fertile bottomlands along that river. Early Dutch land patents recorded the place as Co-nis-tig-i-one and as Nis-ti-go-wo-ne, Mohawk words that roughly mean "extensive corn flats," and the town's name came from them.

The first European settlers were Dutch colonists. They chose land outside the manor of Rensselaerwyck to stay clear of the patroons, and Harmon Vedder got a patent for land here in 1664. The traders of Fort Orange kept the fur trade to themselves, so these families made their living by farming. Martin Cregier, who had been New Amsterdam's first burgomaster, later moved here and died in 1712. Niskayuna was formed from Watervliet on March 7, 1809, with 681 people.

“after the whites had taken possession of our lands, they will make Kaut-sore [literally spoon-food or soup] of our bodies.”
Wikipedia
  • The grumbler chiefSeveral Mohawk chiefs lived here. One was Ron-warrigh-woh-go-wa, whose name meant the great fault finder or grumbler. He fought hard against selling the band's shared lands. When land was deeded to the Dutch and other whites, he made sure the Mohawk kept their hunting and fishing rights on it. In the French and Indian War he generally helped the settlers against the Canadians.
  • An atomic lab since 1946After World War II, General Electric and the U.S. government opened the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna in 1946. In 1973 GE moved its Engineering Development Center out of downtown Schenectady to River Road. GE Global Research now runs one of its two world headquarters on that site, and the other is in Bangalore, India. The science jobs these labs brought made the town one of the best educated in the capital area.
  • Niska-Day since 1980The Niskayuna Community Action Program began Niska-Day in 1980, after a report by the school district on mental health needs, to give residents a shared sense of who they are. It falls each May on the first Saturday after the third Friday, on the Craig Elementary School soccer fields. A family foot race opens the day, followed by a parade and a fair, and fireworks close it.
  • A Shaker prophet in Moby DickHerman Melville wrote Niskayuna into Moby Dick. In a story told by Stubb, the second mate of the Pequod, a sailor on the ship Jeroboam had grown up among the "Neskyeuna Shakers" and had been a great prophet in their community.
