About Schenectady, New York
Schenectady is a city of 67,047 people and the seat of Schenectady County. It sits on the south bank of the Mohawk River, close to where the Mohawk meets the Hudson. The name comes from skahnéhtati, a Mohawk word for "beyond the pines." It pointed to the pine barrens between the Mohawk villages and the Hudson. In 1661 Arendt van Corlaer, a Dutch immigrant, bought a big tract by the river. Another 14 proprietors got 50-acre lots laid out in long strips facing the water. Albany's traders held on to the fur trade, so the settlers farmed. They raised livestock and wheat.
On February 8, 1690, in King William's War, French troops and Native warriors attacked the village without warning. Most of the warriors were Ojibwe and Algonquin. They killed 62 people, 11 of them enslaved Africans. They took 27 captives about 200 miles overland to Montreal. The village rebuilt and lived through a second raid in 1748, which killed 70 residents. It became a borough in 1765, and its militia fought at the Battle of Saratoga. Schenectady was chartered as a city in 1798. Then in 1819 a fire burned more than 170 buildings, and most of the old Dutch-style houses were lost.
- Union College, 1795Three of the oldest churches in town, First Presbyterian, St. George's Episcopal and the Dutch First Reformed, joined in a "union" to start a college. The school opened in 1785 as Schenectady Academy. It got a state charter in 1795 as Union College. It was the first college in the country tied to no single denomination, and the second college in New York.
- Trains to Albany in 1831The Mohawk and Hudson Railroad began running in 1831. It was one of the earliest lines in the country, and it linked Schenectady to Albany through the pine barrens. Local developers soon added the Utica and Schenectady Railroad in 1833. The Schenectady and Susquehanna and the Schenectady and Troy followed in 1836. The city's trains now competed with the Erie Canal for Great Lakes freight bound for New York City.
- Factories before farmsBy 1824 more Schenectady workers made goods than farmed or traded. A cotton mill here spun cotton grown in the Deep South. Later in the century, General Electric and the American Locomotive Company grew up in the city. Both stayed national powers into the mid-20th century. GE went on to help build nuclear-powered submarines.
- Fighting slavery from Union CollegeIn 1824 the city had 3939 people. Among them were 240 free Blacks and 47 who were still enslaved. The last of them were freed in 1827 by New York's slow abolition law. In 1836 Rev. Isaac Groot Duryee helped start an interracial Anti-Slavery Society at Union College. The Anti-Slavery Society of Schenectady followed in 1837. An Underground Railroad route through the area carried freedom seekers on toward Canada.
