About Koontz Lake, Indiana

Samuel Koontz came to Starke County alone on horseback in 1846. He claimed 160 acres at the head of the lake. His log cabin was one of the first in that part of the county. His settlement gave its name to Koontz Lake.

The first grist mill in Starke County was built on the lake's western shore in 1848. That year a dam at Koontz's mill made the lake larger. The water was first known as Woodworth's Lake. The mill later burned, but it was rebuilt on the old spot and kept running under the same management.

  • How the lake community beganBy 1915 the lake was becoming a summer resort. Shoreline land was laid out into lots, and buyers were putting up buildings. People came to fish and pass hot summer days on its shaded shores.
