About Lackland AFB, Texas

Lackland AFB is a community of 9,467 people in Bexar County, surrounded by the city of San Antonio. Work on the base started on June 15, 1941, while the ground still belonged to Kelly Field. In June 1942, early in World War II, it became a separate post called the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center, where young men hoping to become pilots, bombardiers and navigators were sorted and given preflight training.

Cadets studied the mechanics and physics of flight, along with mathematics and the hard sciences, then learned aeronautics and deflection shooting before moving on to primary flight school. In 1946 the post was renamed Lackland Army Air Field, honoring Gen. Frank D. Lackland, who had commanded Kelly Field in its early years. The Air Force broke away from the Army as its own service in 1948, and the field took the new name of Lackland Air Force Base. Every recruit joining the new service passed through it, which earned it the name Gateway to the Air Force.

  • Wilford Hall in 1957Soldiers, sailors and airmen returning from Korea needed a regional hospital, and that need helped bring about Wilford Hall, completed at Lackland in 1957. When it opened it was the biggest medical facility the Air Force had.
  • 28 squadrons in the Korean WarThe Korean War swelled training so much that Lackland ran 28 basic military training squadrons. Recruits had been living in tent cities, so crews quickly put up temporary buildings, among them 129 "I dormitories." In 1955 the count of squadrons dropped to 16, where it held for about twenty years.
  • Recruit dorms of the 1960sBetween 1966 and 1970 the Lackland Military Training Center built four steel and brick dormitories for 1,000 recruits each, with beds, dining halls and training space for four squadrons under one roof. In time six full-size dorms and two 600-person buildings went up, and the extra room became classrooms.
  • Bombers on the parade groundThe USAF Airman Heritage Museum keeps vintage warplanes on the base's parade grounds, including a B-52 Stratofortress, an SR-71 Blackbird, a B-29 Superfortress, a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-25 Mitchell, an F-4 Phantom II and a C-121 Constellation.
