About Macdona, Texas

Macdona is a community of 464 people in southwestern Bexar County, about eighteen miles southwest of downtown San Antonio. It grew up beside the railroad near what is now Loop 1604, and it carries the name of George Macdona, an Englishman who owned the land where the town was laid out.

The first recorded sale of town lots came on July 7, 1886, and a post office opened that same year. The town grew quickly around its rail stop. By 1900 it had a railroad depot, a general store and a cotton gin for local farmers, along with a hotel, a restaurant and three saloons.

  • A new rail line in 1909On September 1, 1909, the Artesian Belt railroad opened a 42-mile line that started at Macdona and ran to Christine. That made Macdona a junction where two railroads met.
  • The 2004 chlorine spillOn June 28, 2004, a BNSF train and a Union Pacific train collided in Macdona. The wreck spilled 9,400 gallons of liquid chlorine, which turned at once into a cloud of gas that spread at least 700 feet. Three people were killed, the Union Pacific conductor along with two people who lived in town, and the injured numbered at least 40 more.
  • From 297 to 464Macdona has stayed unincorporated. It counted 297 people in 2000, and by the 2020 census it had grown to 464.
