About LaFayette, New York

LaFayette is a town of 4,910 people in southern Onondaga County, south of Syracuse. The town sits on ground that once belonged to the Central New York Military Tract, and a portion of it was reserved for the Onondaga people. The first settler arrived around 1797.

The Marquis de Lafayette, a hero of both the French and American revolutions, made a famous tour of the United States in 1824 and 1825. On April 15, 1825, a new town was carved from parts of Pompey and Onondaga and named in his honor.

  • Bought from the Onondagas in 1817In 1817 the Onondagas sold land here, and it was then resold to settlers. The Onondaga language still has its own name for the town, Tgahwisdaniyú·daʼ.
  • An Apple Festival every OctoberThe town holds an Apple Festival each year on the Saturday and Sunday before Columbus Day. The timing fits the town's past, because most of the farmland west of LaFayette has long been planted in apple orchards, and four orchards still operate in the town today.
