About Lafayette, Tennessee

Lafayette is a city of 5,584 people and the county seat of Macon County, Tennessee. It was founded in 1843 to serve as the seat of government for Macon County, which had just been created. The town took the name of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French general who became a hero of the American Revolution.

The city sits near the middle of the county on the northern Highland Rim, right on the divide between two river systems. Streams in its northeastern part, Town Creek among them, run toward the Barren River, while the streams in its southwestern part run toward the Cumberland.

  • The tornado of 2008Around 10:20 p.m. on February 5, 2008, an EF3 tornado formed near Lafayette and cut a path of nearly 21 miles across Macon County from southwest to northeast. The county's warning sirens weren't working, and 14 people died in the western half of the county. Southwest of town, the storm set off a blast at a Piedmont Natural Gas transfer station. On February 8, President George W. Bush came to Lafayette to see the damage.
  • Tobacco, timber and two banksFarming has long carried the economy around Lafayette, and Macon County ranks among the top growers of burley tobacco in Tennessee and the nation. Hardwood lumber is another major business. Two local banks still keep their main offices in town: Citizens Bank, founded in 1909, and Macon Bank & Trust Co., founded in 1919.
  • A first class of fourMacon County High School, home of the Tigers and Tigerettes, was founded in Lafayette in 1927. When its first class graduated, there were only 4 students in it.
