About Lafourche Crossing, Louisiana

Lafourche Crossing, also called Lafourche, is an unincorporated community of 2,427 people in Lafourche Parish, about 3 miles southeast of Thibodaux. It grew up where the railroad crosses Bayou Lafourche, and in the summer of 1863 Union and Confederate troops fought a battle for control of that crossing. Today Louisiana Highway 1 runs through the community along the bayou.

  • Union victory in June 1863On June 20 and 21, 1863, a small Union force under Lieutenant Colonel Albert Stickney held the rail crossing over the bayou. The Confederates who attacked included Texas cavalry, but Stickney's men kept the crossing, and the Battle of Lafourche Crossing ended as a win for the federal troops.
  • Bayonets at close rangeDenis Gaubert, a Thibodaux attorney and historian, has described the fighting here as fierce and hand to hand, with heavy use of bayonets. That kind of close combat was rare in the Civil War.
  • A trestle rebuilt after the warIn 1863 the tracks crossed Bayou Lafourche on a wooden bridge. The railroad trestle that stands over the water here now was built in the years after the war ended.
