About Laguna Seca, Texas

Macedonio Vela fled Mexico during the killings of the War of Reform. In 1867 he and his wife, Mercedes Chapa Cantu, started the Laguna Seca Ranch. A traveling priest gave their daughter Carlota a fruit, and she planted its seeds. In 1871 they became the first orange trees grown in Hidalgo County.

By 1890 Macedonio Vela had built the ranch to more than 75,000 acres. He grazed cattle, horses and mules, and he shipped donkeys to Cuba. Years later his grandson Reynaldo Vela found an artesian well. It fed a small lake that people had long called Dry Lake.
