About Lake Helen, Florida

Lake Helen is a city of 2,842 people in Volusia County, Florida. In 1858 James H. Prevatt, who later served as a county judge, put up a plain house east of the lake, and for years the place was called the Prevatt Settlement. After the judge died in 1883, Henry A. DeLand purchased the property from his heirs. DeLand, whose name was already on a nearby city he had started, founded Lake Helen in 1885 and gave it his daughter's name.

George Dyall laid out a small town in 1884 and built a hotel that carried the name of his only son, Harlan. The Harlan Hotel opened that Thanksgiving Day and drew thousands of Northern visitors each winter, who went sailing on the lake and held picnics in the pine woods. It stayed open until it burned in 1922.

  • An architect for mayorJohn P. Mace, an architect, served as the first mayor once the town incorporated. In 1886 he built his own Queen Anne house, called Edgewood, at 214 Euclid, topped by a cupola on the third story. He was also hired to build Blake Memorial Baptist Church, which the Blake family raised to remember their son Nelson. The stained-glass church first opened for worship on Christmas Day 1894.
  • Old buildings on Euclid AvenueFirst Congregational United Church went up in 1888 in the Gothic Revival style, with a spire three stories tall and walls lined with wood panels inside. Hopkins Hall followed in 1897 at the corner of Euclid and Connecticut, and in 1994 the Orlando Sentinel named it the oldest public building in town.
  • Historic district since 1993The Lake Helen Historic District was designated on September 16, 1993. Its 71 historic buildings fill the blocks bounded by Euclid, Park, Lakeview and West New York Avenues, the heart of the town DeLand founded.
