About Lake Mohegan, New York

Lake Mohegan is a community of 5,896 people in the Town of Yorktown, in Westchester County. The lake at its center was named in 1859 by William Jones, owner of the Mount Pleasant Hotel on its east shore. The Mohegan people themselves came from eastern Connecticut and were pushed west only as far as the Housatonic River, and nothing shows they ever lived near Peekskill.

For more than a century residents called the place Lake Mohegan. In the early 1970s the words flipped, and Mohegan Lake became the everyday name, though the Census Bureau still uses the older order.

  • The LaFarge family houseLouisa LaFarge, the widowed mother of the painter John LaFarge, moved into a Swiss chalet-style house here in 1870. After she died in 1897, her daughters Marie and Aimee took over the house. Aimee's husband, the architect George Lewis Heins, died in 1907. His firm, Heins and LaFarge, had designed City Hall Station and the Bronx Zoo.
  • A chapel built in memoryTo honor Heins, his widow Aimee had Hewitt & Bottomley design a stone Norman-style chapel across the street from the LaFarge house, and St. George's Church went up in 1911 and 1912. John LaFarge designed three of its stained glass windows. The church joined the National Register on May 8, 2012.
  • Cadets from 1880 to 1934The Mohegan Lake School was a military academy for boys that ran from 1880 to 1934. Its buildings are gone, and a marker at St. Mary Church honoring its cadets is the only thing left to recall it.
  • Summer bungalow coloniesIn the 1950s and 1960s, city families spent their summers at bungalow colonies here, among them the Skyview Colony and the Lakeview Colony off U.S. Route 6. The lake itself is private, with its own beaches.
