About Lamoine, Maine

Lamoine was named for an early resident, Andre LeMoyne. Over the years the spelling of his name shifted a little. In French, le moine means the monk. The town is also home to Lamoine State Park.

In 1878 Lamoine was one of the Hancock County towns growing hundreds of bushels of cultivated cranberries. The main kinds were the Cherry and the Bell. The Cherry gave bigger crops, but the Bell was hardier.
