About Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor is a town of 5,089 people in Hancock County, on the northeast shore of Mount Desert Island. The Wabanaki called the island Pemetic, meaning "range of mountains," and came to this shore for clams, leaving big heaps of shells. In September 1604 Samuel de Champlain struck a ledge, probably Egg Rock off Otter Cliffs. He met the local people while fixing his boat and named the island for its bare mountains.

Eden, as the town was first called, was incorporated on February 23, 1796, and its people fished, logged, built ships and ran dairy farms. Painters such as Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church arrived in the 1840s, and their pictures of the coast drew summer visitors. Tobias Roberts opened Eden's first hotel, the Agamont House, in 1855. By 1880 the town had 30 hotels serving a Gilded Age resort that rivaled Newport. In 1918 Eden took the name Bar Harbor, after the sand bar that rises at low tide and leads to Bar Island.

  • The fire of 1947After a dry autumn with half the usual rain, sparks at a cranberry bog near Town Hill started a wildfire on October 17, 1947. Strong winds from October 21 fanned it, and it wasn't declared out until mid-November. Nearly half of the island's eastern side burned, including 67 of the 222 summer cottages and five grand hotels, among them the Agamont House. More than 10,000 acres of Acadia burned, but the business district survived.
  • A national park in 1916Conservation-minded citizens pushed for a park here. Landscape architect Charles Eliot gets credit for the idea, and George B. Dorr, known as the Father of Acadia National Park, gave land and lobbied for it alongside Charles W. Eliot. In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson set the land aside as Sieur de Monts National Monument. Renamed Lafayette National Park in 1919, it became the first national park anywhere east of the Mississippi River, and it took the name Acadia in 1929.
  • Rockefeller's roadsJohn D. Rockefeller Jr. donated roughly one-third of the land in the park and built the network of carriage roads that hikers and cyclists still use. He also guided work on the Park Loop Road, a 27-mile route around the island's east side that took 37 years and was finished in 1958.
  • Torpedoes in 1944In October 1944 the submarine USS Piper fired 12 live torpedoes at Bald Porcupine Island for target practice. It is one of five islands known as the Porcupines. One torpedo failed to go off until the twelfth torpedo set it off. When the Army Corps of Engineers searched the island's 30 acres in 1996, it found nine pieces of unexploded ordnance.
  • Presidents in 1910 and 2010President William Howard Taft played golf at the Kebo Valley Golf Club in 1910. No other sitting president came to town until July 2010, when Barack Obama and his family dropped in unannounced at Mount Desert Island Ice Cream.
