About Cranberry Isles, Maine
The Cranberry Isles take their name from a cranberry marsh of 200 acres on the largest island. They were part of Mount Desert until they became their own town in 1830. John Roberson was the first English settler. He arrived in 1761 on the island that bears his name.
The first settlers on the Cranberry Isles fished and cut barrel staves for a year or two, then moved on. The Bunker, Spurling and Stanley families were the first to stay for good. Benjamin Spurling came from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1768. His family thrived on Great Cranberry for four generations.
- Island fishing lifeMost islanders made their living from the sea. In 1876 the islands held thirty-eight shops for smoking and curing fish.
