About Tremont, Maine

Tremont broke away from Mount Desert on June 3, 1848, under the name Mansel. That August the name was changed to Tremont. It comes from words meaning three mountains, after Western, Defile and Dog mountains. The town sent 160 Union soldiers to the Civil War.

On May 16, 1613, French colonists landed on Mount Desert. They built a fort, raised a cross, held mass and named the spot St. Sauveur. By 1881 the site was thought to be Ship Harbor in Tremont. Captain Argall of Virginia captured the colony that same season.
