About Lanai City, Hawaii
Lanai City is a community of 3,332 people in Maui County, and it serves as the commercial center of the island of Lanai. James Dole bought the whole island in 1922 to grow pineapples, and early in 1923 he had plans drawn for a town where his plantation workers could live.
Dole had grown up in Connecticut, so he borrowed the layout of a New England town square: a central park, now Dole Park, ringed by a grid of streets. During 1923 workers put up a bank, stores, a theater, a hospital, a church and company offices around the open green, and Lanai City became the first model city in Hawaii.
- The world's largest pineapple plantationAt its height, the Lanai plantation was the biggest pineapple operation on earth, with nearly 20,000 acres planted. Its workers arrived from Japan, the Philippines, China, Korea and Puerto Rico, and Lanai City was built to house them.
- Homes for couples in 1930In 1930 the plantation built model homes for couples, each with two bedrooms, a big living room, a kitchen and a roomy yard, along with running water and electricity. Single men lived in houses of three furnished rooms that also had water and power.
- Pine Isle Market since 1951Many of the buildings put up around Dole Park in those early years are still in use. Pine Isle Market began as quarters for single men, then became the Plantation Bakery and later a Mer-Mart, and Pine Isle opened there in 1951.
- Sold for $300 millionCastle & Cooke, a company spun off from the Dole Food Company, came to hold almost all of the island. In 2012 it sold its holdings, 98% of Lanai, to Larry Ellison for $300 million.
