About Lancaster, Ohio

Lancaster is a city of 40,552 people and the seat of Fairfield County, near the Hocking River. In 1796 Ebenezer Zane, a Revolutionary War colonel, asked Congress for a contract to cut a trail across Ohio from Wheeling to Limestone, Kentucky, a route of 266 miles. Zane's Trace was finished by 1797, and Zane was paid in square-mile tracts where it crossed the Muskingum, Hocking and Scioto rivers.

Zane's sons divided the Hocking tract into lots, and the village was founded in 1800, three years before Ohio became a state. Zane gave some lots to tradesmen who promised to build cabins and work at their trades, and by the spring of 1801 the streets at the center of town were laid out much as they remained in 1877. Many settlers were Germans from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, so the place was called New Lancaster until the legislature shortened the name in 1805. Lancaster was incorporated in 1831.

  • Canal boats from 1834The Lancaster Lateral Canal opened to traffic in 1834. It tied the town to the wider Ohio and Erie Canal system, which shipped oats, pork, lard, cheese and wool from the area to markets in the East. The city credits that canal trade with much of its early prosperity.
  • Birthplace of the ShermansTwo brothers were born in a frame house built here in 1811: William Tecumseh Sherman, the Union general, and John Sherman, who went on to serve Ohio in the U.S. Senate and to lead both the State Department and the Treasury. The family enlarged the house in 1816 and added a brick front in 1870. The John Sherman Birthplace joined the National Register in 1966 and is now a museum of the general's life and Civil War relics.
  • Rival papers, one nameThe Ohio Adler, founded around 1807, and the Ohio Gazette, founded in the 1830s, fought hard for readers. The Adler stood against slavery and for the Union, while many townspeople from the Upper South leaned toward the Confederacy. After glassmaker Anchor-Hocking bought the Gazette, the two papers merged in 1937 into the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, the longest continuously running newspaper in Ohio.
  • Designer of the 50-star flagRobert G. Heft of Lancaster designed the 50-star flag of the United States, which Congress adopted in 1960. A historical marker in Lancaster titled The Fifty Star Flag: A Symbol of America honors his flag.
  • Ohio's last county fairThe Fairfield County Fair fills the second week of October every year, making it the 88th and final county fair on Ohio's calendar. Crowds come for truck, tractor and horse pulls, demolition derbies, horse races and concerts.
