About Landisville, Pennsylvania
In 1829, John Landis and his son, John C., laid out a townsite. They named it Centreville because it sat halfway between Mount Joy and Lancaster. In 1832 Landis applied for a post office. Pennsylvania already had a Centreville, so the villagers chose the name Landisville.
The Landisville Camp Meeting Association, a Methodist group, formed in 1870. It bought a tract of virgin woodland south of the village from Dr. Andrew Kauffman. Cottages and places of worship were built in the grove. The annual meetings soon became widely known and drew large crowds.
- The founder's lifeJohn Landis was a farmer who grew wealthy and laid out the town of Landisville. He helped organize the Lancaster County Bank and served as its president. He died in 1860 and was buried in the town he founded.
