About Salunga, Pennsylvania

Salunga is a community of 2,963 people in Lancaster County, spread across parts of West Hempfield and East Hempfield townships. Around 1847 Colonel Hostetter, the owner of the land, divided it into building lots along the Lancaster and Mount Joy turnpike. Buyers took the lots quickly, and families soon built a number of comfortable houses there, which became the start of the village.

  • Named for the crayfish creekSalunga took its name from Chiquesalunga Creek, known today as Chickies Creek. The creek's name comes from the Lenape word "Chiquesalunga," meaning "place of the crayfish." Chiques Creek still flows past the northwestern side of the community on its way southwest to the Susquehanna River.
  • A thriving village by 1883Once Hostetter's lots had sold, Christian Stoner laid out several extra lots beside the first plan, and houses kept going up along the turnpike. By 1883 the History of Lancaster County called Salunga a thriving village.
  • Its own place in 2010For years the census counted Salunga together with its eastern neighbor as the Salunga-Landisville CDP. The two were split into separate places for the 2010 census, which counted 2,695 people in Salunga.
