About Landusky, Montana

Landusky is a community of 22 people in Phillips County, Montana, where the Little Rocky Mountains slope down to the southwest. The town lies in the Rock Creek valley, between Montana Gulch on its northwest side and Mill Gulch on its northeast side. It carries the name of Powell "Pike" Landusky, a cattleman who became a prospector, and it was first listed as a census-designated place before the 2020 census.

  • Gold in 1887Pike Landusky raised cattle for a while before he found gold in the Little Rockies in 1887. His strike brought a rush of miners into the mountains. In 1894 the town that took his name was founded to sell them their supplies.
  • Pike and the frying pan"Tall Heart, Short Temper," a 1950s episode of the television series Death Valley Days, told Pike Landusky's story. In it, a Brule war party captures him and his business partner. Landusky, famous for his temper and his quarrels, went after his captors with a frying pan. The warriors were so amazed by the sight that they backed away and even left him two ponies to calm him down.
  • Zortman's mail, 21 miles aroundLandusky gets its mail through the Zortman post office. Zortman lies less than 5 miles to the northeast straight across the Little Rockies, but the drive is 21 miles, because Ore Street ends in Landusky and runs 3.5 miles southwest out of the mountains to Montana Highway 66.
