About Lapoint, Utah
The town was first called Taft, in honor of William Howard Taft. It was later renamed Lapoint because it sits on a point, a spur of the Uinta Mountains that juts south. The community lies just inside the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation.
Lapoint was built on top of a major Fremont site called Caldwell Village. John Richard Ambler dug there in 1966. Pottery suggests people lived on the site from about 1050 to 1200 AD. Plowing later wiped out nearly all traces on the surface.
