About Maeser, Utah

Maeser is a community of 4,081 people in Uintah County, about 3 miles northwest of Vernal. Settlers first came here in 1878, and for its early years the place was called Mill Ward, after the flour mill that stood at its center. It later took the name of Karl Maeser, an educator. Residents made Maeser an incorporated town in 1935, then gave up that status on July 9, 1970, and the community kept growing, from 3,601 people in 2010 to 4,081 in 2020.

  • The mill behind Mill WardWhen Hatch Fort closed in 1880, Robert Bodily gave forty acres of land to William G. Reynolds so he could build a mill. Reynolds took apart the flour mill he had run for a time inside the fort and put it back together on that land, where water could turn its wheels. One room was ready by Christmas 1880, and the ward came to be known as Mill Ward.
  • A log school in 1882Mill Ward families did not like sending their children away for school, so in 1882 Sterling Colton donated land for a schoolhouse of their own. Neighbors hauled in logs and other materials. Deep snow already covered the ground when the work was set to begin, yet they finished the log cabin anyway, and Viola Pierce became its teacher.
  • Named for Karl MaeserThe community that began as Mill Ward was renamed for Karl Maeser, an educator. Under that name it was an incorporated town from 1935 until 1970.
